Making Time for Kids

With six kids, it can be easy to get lost in the crowd.  We have to be organized to make sure we are connecting with each of our children and giving them individual attention.  One of the ways we do that is through one-on-one dates.  Each month, my husband takes a kid on a date and so do I.  The activity gets to be chosen by our child.  The most important aspect of this tradition is that we put ALL the dates for the year on the calendar in January.  This is the key to making sure it happens.  Now, it doesn’t always work to go on the day that is scheduled months in advance, but it is easy to adapt and choose another time that week if needed.  Having on the calendar, even if it has to be changed, frees us from having to try and remember when we last went on a date with our kids, who it was with, whose turn it is, etc.  We only have to think about when each kid is going on a date ONCE, at the beginning of the year.  After that, we don’t have to use up brain energy trying to figure it out.

Last night my son and I went and saw a movie about fast cars.  It was good, spending time with just him, even if he doesn’t talk as much as my girls. 🙂
