My little 5 year old wanted her ears pierced so badly. After much pleading, and a conversation with mom and dad, we agreed she could get them pierced as a reward for when she learned 100 words and read 30 of her learning books. She agreed and worked so incredibly hard to cross off every box on those two charts.
Her sisters had warned her that it would hurt and she would probably cry, but she just said she knew that and held firmly to her dream.
We ended up at a tattoo parlor after the neighborhood ladies all agreed that was the best place to get it done. She watched everything that was happening with fascination while she waited for her turn. She didn’t express an ounce of nervousness, just frustration over having to wait.
When it was finally her turn, she walked back to the room with total confidence and chatted very maturely with the nice man who would be piercing her ears.
She didn’t even flinch when he pierced the first one. Didn’t cry. Just turned and looked in the mirror after and got the biggest smile on her face, then tried to hide it when she turned back around for the second ear. Because you know, it’s not mature to be so excited. Then she sat calmly and didn’t flinch again for the second piercing.
She was so excited about those earrings. She showed everyone she possibly could.
And then, just like her older sister did so many years ago, she lost an earring.
When she came down today, I was a little concerned when we noticed the earring-less ear. When her sister lost hers, I was never able to get it back in. I tried in the shower, even in her sleep, but she became a pirate until she became old enough to think that was embarrassing. Then she stripped off her lone earring and went back to being a girl with two earring-less ears.
So you can understand my concern when I saw that naked ear. And I became more concerned when I realized the front was a little bit scabby and the hole wasn’t clearly defined.
So I did what I always do when I’m in a predicament. Pray. My little daughter who had a dream of wearing earrings prayed with me as we asked for help to get that earring in.
And God heard that prayer.
I tried putting it through the front and it wasn’t working, and then I had a thought to put it through the back first. It went right through and cleared the hole so I could easily put it through the front.
It’s just an earring. And it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of life. But right then for that little five year old girl, it mattered a very great deal.
God hears us. He knows our dreams and desires. And while most things we struggle with don’t really matter in the grand scheme of life, He knows they matter a very great deal to us in that moment.
And He does what He can.
